Hats and Millinery

Hand made hats for all occasions

Headgear to compliment any outfit

Head wear from hats to helmets, and even crowns and headdresses are often the distinguishing final touch to an outfit. Any commission for a full outfit would include a hat or appropriate headgear, but we also make hats to order, whilst keeping a small range in stock.

Historically Inspired Hats

G Hughs & Son accept commissions for historically inspired millinery, which can either form part of a new outfit, or be produced to compliment an existing look. The starting point for an original design can come from an existing portrait or extant garment. If you require a full outfit please click the button below.

Montero Caps

These versatile and distinctive caps may have originated in Spain as hunting hats, the shape of the cap comes from its unique folding sides, designed as protection against wind and rain.
In recent years they have become increasingly popular among English Civil War Reenactors, with several different takes on the Montero being produced.
A G Hughs & Son Montero is designed with a small brim at the front to shield the eyes of the wearer from the sun, and with a close fitting crown of panels. The peak is formed by folding up the sides of the hat producing the distinctive "boat" shape.

Monteros should be made a good quality wool, for those worn during reenactment events, this is both to  increase authenticity, but also a practical concern as monteros tend to be worn by musketeers handling lit match cord.

Historical Precedence

Allegedly a cannibal with a taste for human flesh, Colonel Thomas Lunsford (pictured both left and right) is crucially shown in contemporary illustrations wearing a form of Montero, which is frequently used as the basis for modern reconstructions of Montero caps produced for historical re-enactment. The illustrator clearly felt that it was important to show the arrangement of panels which make up the crown of the cap.

Floral Bonnet

Floral bonnet with a large silk bow and a decorative band of flowers and autumn fruit.
Floral hats and bonnets can be themed to match the colours of an existing outfit, or themed alongside a commission. In addition the selection of colours, fabrics, and decoration ties the bonnet to season and locality. To order a personalised G Hughs & Son floral bonnet all you need to is contact us via email, and we can discuss materials and accoutrements.
The Bonnet pictured is based on this illustration of a Tuscan Straw Bonnet, which was used as the initial design inspiration.
Although a popular hat in the Victorian period, there's no reason to limit it to a historical setting, as it would be ideal as part of a steampunk costume or contemporary formal wear.
