Victorian Costume

Victorian Costume

One of our specialisms here at G Hughs & Son is our ability to create highly detailed Victorian clothing.

On the right we have an example of a Victorian mourning dress, detailed with silk, embroidery and high quality wool. Accessories to match include original antique Victorian cut glass jewellery. Here at G Hughs and Son we like to go the extra mile to ensure our costumes and replicas are finished to the highest standards.
Above is a close up shot the sleeve of the mourning dress, demonstrating the intricate cartridge pleating and lace cuffs that really add to the luxuriousness of this gown.
Of course as well as the beautiful high quality gown, women's Victorian fashion also called for corsetory.

More more information on various corsetory we can provide, whether as part of a full commission or just as a one of commission, please visit this page.

Another example of our work includes our 1860s Victorian day dress, made of cotton, with a crinoline made of steel which gives the bell shape typical of this period.

This piece is strikingly different to the mourning dress demonstrating the scope of fashion and design found throughout the Victorian period. At G Hughs and Son we pride ourselves on the ability to accurately present the fashion of history. Get in touch to discuss your specific historic needs.

Victorian fashion re-imagined

Character Costume
As well as creating accurate Victorian fashion, we can also items to fulfil the modern trend of 'Steampunk' often taking much from the fashion trends of the nineteenth century.

Our two costumes on the left form part of our 'Junior Aviator' costume, created as part of a family commission. As you can see the lines on the jackets replicate those found on authentic Victorian fashion.
