Commission Historical Costume...

With over 25 years experience in reenactment, archaeology, theatre, and academia, our work is both durable and historically accurate. All of our historical costumes are designed using contemporary sources, such as woodcuts and paintings, as well as documentary sources and detailed examination of extant garments, this ensures the techniques and materials used remain faithful to the original garments.

We offer historical and historically inspired costumes and garments to a range of individuals and organisations.

Museum Quality Reproductions

Creating costume and clothing based on illustrations, paintings, and analysis of extant garments is one of G Hughs and Son's specialities, and after many hours of painstaking research, our work takes into account the construction techniques, materials, and the functionality of the pieces we produce as well as the cut and appearance of the garment.

Additionally our academic backgrounds allow us to present this information concisely and effectively. Please feel free to contact us to discuss individual commissions, as we are able to produce individual items as well as complete outfits.

What we can offer you...

Tudor Costume

For historically inspired evening wear, G Hughs & Son transfer our  expertise in manufacturing historical costume to create garments which are informed by historical design, styles, and silhouettes, but which can be designed to meet your personal requirements depending on budget and personal preference.

We work closely with our clients to make sure that a G Hughs & Son Banqueting gown, or historically inspired evening gown is in a colour and pattern of your choosing, arranging measuring and fitting sessions to create a unique and personalised garment.

Seventeenth Century

At G Hughs and Son we have a specialism in seventeenth century costume, from creating the intricate European Infanta to insular Civil War battlefield kit.

We only use the highest quality materials such as silks for our banqueting gowns and pure wool for our reenactment kit ensuring authenticity comes first.

The Infanta commission was a piece we truly loved making, it was a complete head to toe costume including wig, underpinnings, accessories and shoes.

Victorian Fashion and Costume

Another area of costume G Hughs & Son excel in creating is Victorian costume, creating looks and clothing from throughout the period as well as from across the empire.

One very particular commission we were delighted with is our recreation of the Maharajah. This costume is composed of a simple blue linen undershirt. On top of which is worn a pair of blue embroidered tunban pyjamas. The chogga is made from copper and green silk and is richly decorated with beads. Over all of this is worn a full length angrakha made from cerise silk with gold motifs. This coat is embellished with beads and crystals and reflects the wealth and status of its owner.
